What Does “Nudge” Mean on TikTok?

TikTok is consistently introducing innovative features to keep its community engaged and foster dynamic interactions. One such recent addition is the “Nudge” feature, designed to grab the attention of users or creators on the platform. Accessible through live notification settings, the message inbox, and profile history, this function acts as a virtual tap on the shoulder to encourage activity and interaction.

What Is the Purpose of the Nudge Feature?

The concept of nudging on TikTok is reminiscent of Facebook’s classic “poke” feature. It allows users to subtly prompt creators or friends to take action, such as starting a live stream or responding to messages. For creators, receiving a nudge can signal audience interest, encouraging them to engage in real-time. However, users have the option to ignore the alert or respond depending on their preference.

How to Use the Nudge Feature on TikTok

The Nudge feature can be utilized in different areas of TikTok, making it versatile for a variety of interactions. Here’s how you can use it effectively:

1. Nudging Creators to Go Live

If you want to prompt a creator to start a live session, follow these steps:

  • Open TikTok and navigate to the creator’s profile.
  • Tap the bell icon located at the top of their profile page. Note: If you’re not already following the creator, TikTok will require you to follow their account before proceeding.
  • From the menu that appears, select “LIVE Notification Settings.”
  • Enable the “Nudge” option by tapping the corresponding radio button.
2. Nudging Friends from Profile Views

TikTok also allows nudging through the profile history feature:

  • Go to your profile on TikTok.
  • Tap the profile view icon at the top to access a list of users who have recently visited your profile.
  • If someone you know is on this list, and you are mutual friends, you’ll see the “Nudge” option next to their name. For accounts you don’t recognize, the option will display as “Follow.”
  • Tap “Nudge” to subtly signal your interest in starting a conversation.
3. Nudging Through Messages

If a friend has stopped responding to your messages or you wish to grab their attention during a chat, the Nudge feature is also available in the message inbox:

  • Open TikTok and head to your Inbox.
  • Select an existing chat or tap the “+” icon to compose a new one.
  • Above the message box, you’ll see the “Nudge” button. Tap it to send a notification to the other user.

When to Use the Nudge Feature (and When Not To)

While nudging is a convenient way to connect with others, overusing it can lead to negative outcomes. Frequent nudges, especially during busy periods, may irritate the recipient. For creators, persistent notifications could result in them disabling the feature altogether. Similarly, excessive nudges in personal conversations might prompt the other person to mute notifications or even block your account.

The Nudge feature should be used thoughtfully to maintain positive interactions. Its primary purpose is to enhance engagement and communication, not to overwhelm or annoy other users
